In my motion media class, we were asked to redesign a logo of a book as if it were for a movie or TV show. I chose the book “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” by Suzanne Collins.

This book goes into the background of the antagonist of the previous “Hunger Games” books. In summary, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow has become the mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from the poorest part of the country.

As they train, fight, and live together (spoiler ahead), they eventually fall for each other. Throughout the book, Snow must constantly choose between his duty and honor, and the love of his life.

After looking at multiple sources of photographic and typographic inspiration, I decided that I wanted my final design to be bold and adventurous, yet grim and mysterious.

I experimented with font, text placement, distortion, and color before landing on the final typographic design below.

For the final design, I put the text on top of images of a snake and songbird, as well as a background of colorful leaves. For color, I decide to stick with the golden yellow of the original book cover, adding green, magenta, and turquoise to the leaves in the background. I made the snake and songbird grayscale to juxtapose the color of the text and background imagery.

After creating a mockup of the design on a streaming service and receiving feedback from my peers and professor (thanks Mrs. Maloney!), I am confident that my skill level has reached new heights.
